But first …

What is an ABN?

ABN stands for Australian Business number.

Each ABN is unique and made up of 11 digits. ABN’s are used to identify businesses both to the government and the public, and for tax and other business activities.

When you have your ABN you can use it:

  • To identify your business on your website, orders and invoices
  • To get a domain name
  • To claim relevant grants and GST credits (note: you don’t need to register  for GST until your turnover is more than $75k per year. If you reach $75k during the year, you can register half through the financial year.)
  • For relevant PAYG (Pay as you go) tax

How do you know if you need an ABN?

If you plan to run a business or enterprise, you legally need an ABN.

Businesses and enterprises can come in a variety of categories eg sole trader, partnership and company.
